![]() ![]() With G of N since it's on this table right over here. Recursive function a different, well, I got, I'll stick In a lot of ways, the recursive definition is a little bit more straightįorward, so let's do that. G of N recursively? And I encourage you to pause But this is algebraicallyĮquivalent to this, to our original one. You're starting at 168 and you're multiplying by one half. This one makes a littleīit more intuitive sense, it kinda jumps out at you, So, we could rewrite this whole thing as 168 times two is what? 336? 336, did I do that right? 160 times two would be 320, plus 16, two times eight, so yeah, 336. Well, one half to the negative one is just two, is just two, so, this is times two. The N, times one half to the negative one. ![]() ![]() Here is the same thing as one half to the N. One, that's the same thing as one half, let me write this. Properties a little bit, we could say G of N isĮqual to, let's see, one half to the N minus Another way you could think about it is, well, let's use our exponent And you can think of it in other ways, you could write thisĪs G of N is equal to, let's see, one way you could write it, as, you could write it as 168,Īnd I'm just algebraically manipulating it over Nice explicit definition for this geometric series. You're gonna multiply by one half twice, and you see that right over there. If N is two, well, two minus one, you're gonna multiplyīy one half one time, which you see right over here, N is three, you're gonna multiply by one half twice. If N is equal to one, you're going to have one minus one, that's just gonna be zero. Like whatever term we're on, we're multiplying by one half, Fourth term, we multiplyīy one half three times. Third term, we multiplyīy one half two times. The second term, we multiplyīy one half one time. Gonna multiply by one half? The first term, we multiplyīy one half zero times. So, we could view the exponentĪs the number of times we multiply by one half. Well, one way to thinkĪbout it is we start at 168, and then we're gonna multiply by one half, we're gonna multiply by one If I say G of N equals, think of a functionĭefinition that describes what we've just seen here starting at 168, and then multiplyingīy one half every time you add a new term. Of N, how can we define this explicitly in terms of N? And I encourage you to pause the video and think about how to do that. Times, it's often called the common ratio, times one half. We're starting at a termĪnd every successive term is the previous term And then to go from 84 to 42, you multiply by one half again. Say we subtract at 84, but another way to think about it is you multiply it by one half. If we think of it as starting at 168, and how do we go from 168 to 84? Well, one way, you could The first term is 168, second term is 84, third term is 42, and fourth term is 21,Īnd we keep going on, and on, and on. Say this is the same thing as the sequence where It is that this function, G, defines a sequence where N Converting is usually less work.- So, this table here where you're given a bunch of Ns, N equals one, two, three, four, and we get the corresponding G of N. Thankfully, you can convert an iterative formula to an explicit formula for arithmetic sequences. In the explicit formula "d(n-1)" means "the common difference times (n-1), where n is the integer ID of term's location in the sequence." In the iterative formula, "a(n-1)" means "the value of the (n-1)th term in the sequence", this is not "a times (n-1)." Even though they both find the same thing, they each work differently-they're NOT the same form. A + B(n-1) is the standard form because it gives us two useful pieces of information without needing to manipulate the formula (the starting term A, and the common difference B).Īn explicit formula isn't another name for an iterative formula. M + Bn and A + B(n-1) are both equivalent explicit formulas for arithmetic sequences. So the equation becomes y=1x^2+0x+1, or y=x^2+1ītw you can check (4,17) to make sure it's right Substitute a and b into 2=a+b+c: 2=1+0+c, c=1 Then subtract the 2 equations just produced: Solve this using any method, but i'll use elimination: The function is y=ax^2+bx+c, so plug in each point to solve for a, b, and c. Let x=the position of the term in the sequence Since the sequence is quadratic, you only need 3 terms. that means the sequence is quadratic/power of 2. However, you might notice that the differences of the differences between the numbers are equal (5-3=2, 7-5=2). This isn't an arithmetic ("linear") sequence because the differences between the numbers are different (5-2=3, 10-5=5, 17-10=7) Calculation for the n th n^\text=17 = 5 + 4 ⋅ 3 = 1 7 equals, start color #0d923f, 5, end color #0d923f, plus, 4, dot, start color #ed5fa6, 3, end color #ed5fa6, equals, 17

![]() ![]() While a substantial body of research has studied HRRP mostly for its impact on quality outcomes (such as 30-day readmission rates), 13, 14 the prior literature has not comprehensively studied the impact of HRRP on inter-dependent dimensions of health care performance (such as cost and patient experience). 11 Since achieving the Triple Aim objectives may require hospitals to make significant tradeoffs, we investigate whether the HRRP had a significant impact on all 3 measures-healthcare quality, cost, and patient experience-simultaneously. The HRRP has been criticized for only incentivizing hospitals to reduce readmission rates at all costs, but not for having mechanisms to enforce improvements in other important areas of healthcare delivery, such as patient safety and experience. In this study, we analyze whether the HRRP achieved its intended Triple Aim goals, with respect to improvements in patient quality of care, reductions in cost, and improvements in patient experience, since it is important for policymakers to pursue synergies across these inter-dependent objectives. 10ĭespite substantial efforts to reduce hospital readmission rates, the impact of the HRRP on the Triple Aim has not been studied in a unified manner. ![]() 4 Prior research has used the Triple Aim to evaluate interventions that support development and use of patient self-management programs, 5, 6 mental health treatment programs, 7 care transitions, 8 accountable care organizations, 9 and telehealth. The Triple Aim initiative was introduced by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, building upon 3 interdependent pillars of healthcare: quality of population health, cost of care, and individual experience of care. In this study, we evaluate the efficacy of HRRP based on its impact on the Triple Aim goals. 2 Considering that hospitals typically operate on an average gross margin of 5-7%, the financial penalty imposed by the HRRP policy is substantial. In 2019 alone, 2,583 hospitals were penalized for a total amount of $566 Million. CMS increased this penalty up to 2% in 2014, and up to 3% from 2015 onward. hospitals were penalized by 1% of overall Medicare reimbursements. Initially, the program covered heart attack, congestive heart failure (CHF), and pneumonia, but was soon expanded to include other chronic conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD). 1 The HRRP mandates CMS to reduce payments to hospitals with excessive readmission rates. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) established the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program (HRRP) in 2012, under Section 3025 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), with a focus on reducing excessive hospital readmissions. ![]() The return of the 2021 Colt Anaconda has come The Anaconda is back and its better than ever. Finally, fold the top down to about the middle.Īfter you've folded the top down, flip the dough over so the seams are now on the bench. As shown top-left, above, fold the bottom of the circle up to the middle. Lightly flour the bench and flip over the pre-shaped round of dough. Then, you'll flip the envelope over and use two hands to drag the dough and create tension as the dough slightly sticks to the bench. The essence of this technique is to fold the pre-shaped round to resemble an envelope. This straightforward approach is always my first choice when shaping a boule. If the dough isn't relaxed adequately it will resist stretching and folding, and may even tear. The tighter the pre-shape the longer the bench rest, but typically 20 to 30 minutes is sufficient. Sufficient bench rest is important: it should be long enough to allow the dough to relax after pre-shaping. If the dough does begin to tear, use a lighter hand when pushing, pulling, and folding the dough.Įach of the methods below starts with a pre-shaped and rested round of dough. This tearing can be caused by too short of a bench rest or by handling too forcefully. If you use too much flour the dough will slide too easily, never able to develop sufficient tension.įinally, the surface of the dough should not tear when shaping. The key to shaping a boule, using each of the following methods, is to rely on the bench to slightly tug on the dough as you drag it across. Just as the amount of flour on your hands is important, so too is the flour on the bench. ![]() If your hands do begin to stick, slide them along the bench (work surface) to gather a dusting of flour. Use just enough flour on your hands to keep them from sticking but avoid using too much, as this can incorporate unwanted raw flour into the dough. General shaping principlesĪs usual, it's important to prevent your hands from sticking excessively to the dough as you’re shaping. It's a versatile way to shape, and the bread can ultimately be taken in the desired direction of the baker.Īs with most things in baking, there are countless ways to shape a boule, but below are three of my most used and most effective. Tearing by hand is acceptable, encouraged: a bread for sharing.Ī boule can also lend itself to decorative scoring techniques as the spacious surface is the perfect canvas to get creative and more intricate. I find bread shaped as a boule typically has a more rustic feel, with the intention that it's to be cut in half or into quarters, then further sliced or simply left whole and placed on the dinner table. Starting with the same dough, we can create drastically different results simply by shaping it differently. However, it's more than that: it dictates how we slice, eat and, ultimately, share the bread we bake. Of course there are many ways to experiment when shaping dough - some more elaborate, involved, and intricate - but a shaping a boule should always have a place in a baker's toolkit.Īt first glance, it's obvious that shaping is used to impart a certain look and aesthetic to a dough. But there's always the humble boule, a round loaf you return to as a go-to shaping technique. Then transfer each shaped dough onto a proofing couche.A rustic, round loaf of crunchy bread - there's something comforting about this simple shape, isn't there? This is usually the starting point for most: you first learn to shape a round, then maybe dabble in oblong loaves, perhaps a baguette or two.

"We are one step closer to permanent protection for the Boundary Waters watershed," Ingrid Lyons, executive director of the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters, said in a statement. Peter Marshall, a spokesman for Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness, suggested that Twin Metals, instead of pursuing the project further, should turn to the Court of Federal Claims to seek compensation for the more than $550 million it has invested. The Trump administration reinstated those leases in 2019 as part of its push to lessen U.S. The Obama administration declined to renew Twin Metals' mineral rights leases in its final weeks in office in 2016, citing the threat of acid mine drainage to the Boundary Waters, the country's most-visited federally designated wilderness area.
